THE STORY BEHIND THE COLLECTABLE
As a child, I collected symbols. Not toys exactly — objects that meant something because of the story they came from. I had a whole drawer full of them. For "Lassie Come Home", it was a small plastic collie. It wasn't much to look at, but it let me keep that story close — something I could hold when the book was closed. I wanted to make that for "Do You See What I See?" — an artifact of the story. Something a child could keep.
THE STORY OF THE AUTHOR & THE ILLUSTRATOR
Working with Tracy Weldon was one of the most creatively alive experiences of my career. Tracy brings a rare gift — the ability to pack an entire emotional world into a single image. Together, we set out to capture something elusive: the precise instant a child crosses from the real into the imagined. I believe we found it.
